The familiar August sound of shoulder pads cracking has started to fill the air around the practice field near Indian Stadium, as the Itawamba AHS Indians prepare to defend their 2009 division 1-4A championship and attempt to make a run at the class 4A state championship.

This year's tribe of Indians are excited about following a 2009 campaign which included a school record 13-game winning streak.

The Indians were 4A north runners-up last season as they fell short to the Lafayette Commodores, a team they defeated in the third week of the regular season.

The Indians are determined to get back there again this year. Several sources have predicted Lafayette - IAHS matchup to decide who gets to Jackson, but the IAHS players and coaches know that it won't be easy.

The Indians will be led by quarterback Maikhail Miller. Miller is confident in his team's ability to build on last season's success.

“We’ve worked really hard since the first day of practice,” said Miller. “We are going to keep working hard and step it up to get ready for the first game.”

The rocket-armed quarterback will have an array of offensive weapons to deliver the ball to, including seniors Jimmy Ruff and Devonta Jackson, and juniors Austin Shumpert and Shante Rogers.

The offensive and defensive linemen have been fine-tuning their skills in the trenches, while defensive backs are working on footwork, and linebackers are perfecting pursuit angles.

The Indians will rely on the offense to set the tone early in the season, as the Indians lost 25 seniors from last seasons team, most of whom were on the defensive side of the ball.

In his first year at IAHS, head coach Ashley Kuhn has been impressed with the players’ hard work.

“The players have great attitudes and are working really hard,” said Kuhn. “It’s been hot, but the guys have pushed through it and are improving every day.”

The Indians will face a formidable opponent in their preseason jamboree game, as they will meet the defending 5A state champion West Point Green Wave at Mississippi State University this Saturday.

The following week, the Indians will host the Hernando Tigers in a classic game on Aug. 20
