Shirley Smith

TREMONT – Shirley Mae Spencer Smith, 70, died Wednesday, July 22, 2009, at her home. She was born Nov. 24, 1938, in Tremont to Taft and Linnie Holmes Hamner. She worked at Charm Step for 10 years. She also owned and operated the Crossroads Quick Mart until her retirement. She was a songwriter and a Baptist.

A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 29, at the Itawamba Memorial Garden in Fulton with Mike Deaton officiating. Senter Funeral Home of Fulton was in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include one son, Ronny (Diane) Spencer of Brookhaven; two grandchildren, Justin (Anabel) Spencer and Julie (Brian) McKee of Brookhaven; one brother, Richard (Sam) Hamner of Hamilton, Ala.; three sisters, Rebecca McFadden of Hamilton, Ala., Dorothy (Dale) Zentgrafth of Manhattan, Ill., and Joyce Roberson of Tremont; three great-grandchildren, Cohen and Taylor Grace McKee, and Phillip Ross Spencer; one stepgreat-granddaughter, Hannah McKee; a special niece and nephew, Joe and Lynn Crilly, and Pat and Billy Holland; and a special friend, Helen Smith.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Bill Smith.

Pallbearers were Billy Holland, Ricky Holland, Randy Roberson and Richie Hamner.

John T. Woodrow

PEARL – John T. “Tommy” Woodrow, 49, died Monday, July 27, 2009, at River Oaks Hospital.

Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 29, at Cederlawn Cemetery in Jackson. Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home Highland Colony was in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his mother, Mary Joe Woodrow of Ridgeland; one sister, Jo Carol Parker (Doug) of Madison; one brother, Gary W. Woodrow (Mitzi) of Mantachie; one niece, Kim Parker of Foley, Ala.; two nephews, Brett Parker of Brandon and Joey Woodrow (Lindsay) of Crystal Springs; and one great-niece, Kayla Woodrow of Crystal Springs.

Dana Cockrell

TUPELO - Dana Marie Grissom Cockrell, 26, died Thursday, July 30, 2009. She was born June 13, 1983, in Red Bay, Ala. She was a medical physician assistant. She attended Big Oak Baptist Church most of her life. She enjoyed water sports and horseback riding, and she loved her dog, Rocky.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at the Davis Event Center on the campus of Itawamba Community College in Fulton. Bro. Doug Wilson officiated. Burial was in Keyes Cemetery. Senter Funeral Home of Fulton was in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include her parents, Janice and Wayne Sullivan, and Mark and Angela Grissom, all of Fulton; her grandparents, Robert and Margaret Loden, and Wayne and Jennievee Grissom, all of Fulton; one brother, Eric Grissom (Brooke) of Fulton; two stepsisters, Emily Lamb (Justin) and Jaime Martin (Chad), all of Fulton; uncles, Dr. J.D. Loden (Elizabeth) of Belden, Bryan Grissom (Mary Margret) of Cordova, Tenn., and Jerry Grissom of Fulton; several nieces, nephews, aunt, uncles and cousins.

Pallbearers were T.J. Miles, Shay Collum, Justin Lamb, Chad Martin, Eric Grissom, Dr. J.D. Loden, Cory Maxwell and Stephen Blake.

Colin Cockrell

TUPELO – Colin Lee Cockrell, 29, died Thursday, July 30, 2000. He was born Dec. 12, 1979, in Tupelo. He was a member of Lakeland Baptist Church. He was employed as a supervisor and truck driver for W&W Pallets. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed horseback riding, water sports and racing.

Services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, at Senter Funeral Home Chapel in Fulton with Bro. Danny Rushing and Bro. Tim Winters officiating. Burial was in Stephens Cemetery.

Survivors include his parents, Louise Ward of Fulton, and Donnie and Charlotte Cockrell of Mantachie; four sisters, Shannon Harbin (Roger) of Fulton, Michelle Allred (Steve) of Marietta, and Sonya Johnson (Delton) and Tonya Justice, both of Mantachie; one brother, Bradley Smith (Ramona) of Mantachie; many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

Pallbearers were Elmer Gilland, Adam Johnson, Mike Woolven, Jody Berryhill, Shae Collum and Russ Gorden.

Joyce Underwood

MANTACHIE – Joyce Jane Rieves Underwood, 60, died Thursday, July 30, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center after a long illness. She was born April 29, 1949, in Itawamba County to Eula Bea Sheffield and the late William Hugh Sheffield. She was a member of the Ozark Methodist Church and a retired school teacher at Mantachie Elementary. She loved her family and friends and enjoyed playing with her grandsons.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, at the McNeece-Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Mantachie with Rev. Joe Coggins and Bro. Castor Buse officiating. Burial was in the Ozark Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Jerry Underwood, of Mantachie; two daughters, Hannah Carroll (Adam) of Mooreville and Hayley Rieves of Mantachie; the father of her children, Robert Rieves; two stepdaughters, Tabitha Underwood and Fara Adams (Gary); one stepson, Jerry Underwood Jr.; her mother, Eula Bea Sheffield; three brothers, Danny Sheffield (Judy), Roger Sheffield (Jennifer) and Eric Sheffield (Missy), all of Mantachie; one sister, Rhonda Ruth (Mike) of New York; two grandsons; six stepgrandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Pallbearers were Terry Jones, Jimmy Hendrix, Tony Campbell, Jimmy Young, Paul Poteet and Paul Underwood.

Honorary pallbearers were her Bunko buddies.

Wayne Fugitt

TERRY - Wayne Fugitt, 70, died Friday, July 31, 2009, at his residence. A native of Fulton, he had lived in Jackson for 39 years. He was a design engineer and, in 1978, he started Southern Time and Alarm, now known as S.T.A. Security, which is currently run by his son, Wendell. He served in the U.S. National Guard and was a Baptist.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, at the funeral home with burial in Rosemont Gardens Memorial Park. Chancellor Funeral Home of Byram was in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his son, Wendell Fugitt (Charynne King) of Hattiesburg; daughters, Darlene Uptagrafft (Raymond) of Guntersville, Ala., and Keva Wilmoth (Jack) of Terry; sisters, Ouida Gentry of Florence and Dean Gaddy of Fulton; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy "Dot" Fugitt.

Shirley Dodds-Robinson

BOONEVILLE - Shirley J. Dodds-Robinson, 67, died Friday, July 31, 2009, at her residence.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, at Booneville Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Robbie Johnson, Seth Dodds and Josh McCoy officiating. Burial was in Booneville Cemetery. Booneville Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

She is survived by her husband, James Arthur Robinson; six sons, Jeff McCoy (Angel) of Booneville, Rick McCoy (Tracy) of Fulton, Mark McCoy (CJ) of Booneville, Jason Robinson of New Site, Tony Robinson(Kim) and Craig Robinson (Christy) of Booneville; her mother, Estelle Dodds of Booneville; a brother, Donald Dodds (Debbie) of Booneville; two sisters, Dorothy Ann Crum of Kossuth and Bobbie Jean Jones (Raymond) of Booneville; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren

Thestle Patterson

GOLDEN - Thestle Patterson, 88, died July 31, 2009, at the Red Bay Hospital. She was born April 17, 1921, in Tishomingo County to Benjamin and Samantha Harrison Patterson. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Red Bay, Ala.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, at the Deaton Funeral Home Chapel in Red Bay with Bro. Mickey Trammel officiating. Burial was in the Ridge Cemetery. Deaton Funeral Home of Red Bay, Ala. was in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include her nieces, Regina Sparks of Golden, Martha Logalbo of Killen, Ala., and Peggy Woods of Golden; her nephews, Jimmy Patterson and C.K. Patterson, both of Red Bay; her sister-in-law, Lillian Patterson of Red Bay; and several other nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and nine brothers, Arthur, Aubrey, Rabon, Charles, Odis, Adis, Leo, Henry and Delmer Patterson.

Laura McCaskill

TUPELO - Laura Rhudy McCaskill, 96, died Saturday, August 1, 2009, at Cedars Heathcare Center after an extended illness.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 3, at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Bro. Alton Elrod officiating and the eulogy by Eddie McCaskill. Burial was in Lee Memorial Park. W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors was in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include two sons, Gerald McCaskill (Ruth) of Southaven and Grady McCaskill (Jane) of Saltillo; one daughter, Sue Bedford (Leroy) of Skyline; six grandchildren, Eddie McCaskill (Gay) of Athens, Ga., Jerry McCaskill ( Beth) of Nashville, Tenn., Jefferey McCaskill (Renae) of Olive Branch, Leroy Bedford Jr. (Karen) of Memphis, Tenn., Barry Bedford of Mooreville and Teresa Aldridge (David) of Tremont; 14 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters-in-law, Shelly Matthews and Jean McCaskill, both of Birmingham, Ala., and Earline McCaskill of Tupelo.
